How often should you clean? An honest guide

Most homes do well with a thorough clean every two weeks — families with children, households with pets and larger homes often choose weekly, while small households can manage every third or fourth week. There is no single right answer, but there is an honest starting point, and adjusting is easier than getting it perfect from the start.

Here is an honest guide to what is typically enough — and when it makes sense to get help with it.

The short answer: every two weeks is a good starting point

Most homes do well with a thorough cleaning every two weeks — it is also the most popular choice at Hilfr. Weekly cleaning makes sense for families with children, households with pets and larger homes, while small households can often manage with every third or fourth week.

If in doubt, start with every two weeks. At Hilfr there is no lock-in on recurring bookings, so you can always turn it up or down once you've felt the need after a couple of visits.

Room by room: how often does what need doing?

Not all rooms have the same needs. A rule of thumb that holds in most homes:

  • Bathroom: weekly — limescale, soap residue and bacteria build up fast
  • Kitchen: weekly, with worktops wiped down as you go
  • Floors in the hallway, kitchen and living room: weekly or every two weeks depending on traffic
  • Bedrooms: every two weeks, with bed linen changed weekly or every two weeks
  • Windows inside, skirting boards and cupboard doors: a couple of times a year — typically as part of a deep cleaning

What shifts the need

Children and pets are the two biggest factors: hair, crumbs and traffic in and out mean that weekly cleaning is often the realistic level. The size of the home matters too — not because a large home gets dirty faster, but because each visit has to cover more.

Conversely, a single person or a couple in a flat without pets can easily keep things at a good level with cleaning every three weeks, as long as they tidy up and wipe down surfaces day to day.

Regular help turns frequency into a habit

The hardest part of cleaning is rarely the work itself — it is getting it done regularly. A recurring booking with the same cleaner means standards never slip, and every visit becomes more efficient because the cleaner knows the home.

At Hilfr you choose the frequency yourself when you book, and you can stop the arrangement at any time — no lock-in and no notice period. If the weekday, time or number of hours needs changing, you propose it on the booking yourself and pick “This and all future”; if the rhythm itself has to change, write to us.
