Deep cleaning: what is it, and how many hours do you need?

A deep clean is the thorough round that covers everything the regular cleaning does not reach: skirting boards, tiles and grout, interior windows, kitchen cupboards and descaling. Expect roughly twice as long as an ordinary cleaning of the same home — for most homes 4-6 hours, and more if it has been a long time since the last one. Here is what it includes, and how to set the number of hours.

Here are the answers — and an explanation of why a deep cleaning at Hilfr is not a fixed-price package, but a number of hours you control yourself.

Deep cleaning vs. regular cleaning

The regular, recurring cleaning keeps the home running: vacuuming, mopping, surfaces, kitchen and bathroom. A deep cleaning goes one level deeper and covers everything that never gets reached in everyday life:

  • Skirting boards, door frames and radiators
  • Tiles and grout in the bathroom and kitchen, incl. heavy descaling
  • Interior windows and window sills
  • Kitchen cupboards and drawers, the extractor hood and possibly the oven and fridge
  • Under and behind furniture that otherwise never gets moved

So what is a base cleaning, then?

In practice the Danish terms are used almost interchangeably, and there is no official definition. Many cleaning companies, however, use 'grundrengøring' (base cleaning) for the big initial cleaning before a recurring arrangement begins — so the ongoing cleaning starts from a clean baseline — and 'hovedrengøring' (deep cleaning) for the big, standalone one-off job, such as the spring cleaning.

What matters is not the word but the alignment of expectations: agree precisely on what needs to be covered before the work begins.

How many hours should you expect?

A deep cleaning takes considerably longer than a regular cleaning — the best yardstick is your own ordinary cleaning: a deep clean takes roughly twice as long in the same home. If you normally book 2.5 hours, reckon on 5; if you book 3, reckon on 6. For most homes that lands at 4-6 hours, and more for large houses or homes where it has been a long time since the last big session.

For comparison, a deep cleaning as a package deal from traditional companies typically costs from around DKK 2,000 and up to DKK 8,000 or more. At Hilfr you instead pay the cleaner's hourly rate times the number of hours — fully transparent, and you decide the level of ambition yourself.

How to book a deep cleaning at Hilfr

Find a cleaner in your area and mention in the messages that it is a deep cleaning: the size of the home, what especially needs attention, and any special requests such as oven cleaning or descaling. The cleaner can then estimate the number of hours before you book.

Book an hour too many rather than too few the first time — and remember that the cleaner uses your cleaning products and equipment, so put everything out, including any specialist products for limescale or the oven.
